(KTNC) - Peru State College is inviting area residents to attend a screening of an HBO documentary that explores aspects of the increasing rates of obesity in the United States – specifically in children. The film, titled “The Weight of the Nation,” will be shown at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the College Theatre.
The Peru Student Education Association is sponsoring the screening, which is free and open to the public. Associate Professor of Education at Peru State, Dr. Kyle Ryan, says there are many parts to the documentary. (play audio :29)
Dr. Ryan says obesity is becoming more of a problem in the United States, with a majority of people in the nation likely to be considered obese by 2030. That, he says, will be a drain on the nation’s healthcare system. (play audio :35)
The film does not address the disparity in obesity rates between children in urban and rural communities, though there is a perhaps surprising difference. Dr. Ryan says youth in urban areas have greater access to healthy foods, preventative healthcare, and wellness centers, than their counterparts in rural areas. (play audio :31)
The screening will be followed by an open session where attendees can ask questions and discuss options available to them for proper nutrition and exercise. Peru State elementary education majors will provide childcare and activities for children age five and up in the Al Wheeler Activity Center beginning at 6:45 p.m. (play audio :21)
