A semi truck and pick-up collided Thursday morning in Atchison County, leaving one person dead, and a stretch of heavily traveled roadway shut down for a period of time.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 72-year-old Marcia Rygaard of Effingham was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the intersection of K-116 and U.S. Highway 59 about five miles north of Nortonville.
The Patrol says a pickup driven by Rygaard was stopped at a stop sign on K-116 and pulled out in front of a southbound semi on U.S. 59 driven by 66-year-old William Tatum of Saint Joseph, causing the semi to strike her truck.
Tatum was not hurt.
The patrol says both individuals were wearing a seatbelt.
Stretches of K-116 and U-S 59 were shut down for about 5 hours following the accident, which was reported shortly before 9 o’clock Thursday morning.
