Cooper Nuclear Open House in Stella Thursday
09/06/2012

(KTNC) - The public will have an opportunity to see a mock-up of the drywell of the Cooper Nuclear Station this week.
The mock-up is located at the former Southeast Nebraska Community School in Stella. It is a one-to-one representation of a quarter section of the plant’s drywell – which is the area of the plant that houses the reactor.  The actual drywell is accessible only when the plant is in an outage.
The mock-up was built to allow crews to safely rehearse work activities scheduled for this fall’s refueling outage.  The outage will include replacement of four fan coil units, which are used to cool the drywell.
The Nebraska Public Power District will hold an open house for the public from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. today at the recently completed drywell mock-up in Stella.  Visitors will have an opportunity to see how large and complex the work will be during the upcoming refueling outage.
Information on the mock-up and the scope of the work is available through a video tour on the Nebraska Public Power District’s Facebook page and at N-P-P-D-dot-com.
