Richardson Co. Commission Rejects Offer for Bridge
08/29/2012

(Falls City) - Richardson County Commissioners rejected an offer from an insurance company to pay for a bridge that collapsed northwest of Humboldt earlier this year.  Meeting Tuesday with County Attorney Bob Meyer and Highway Superintendent Scott Huppert, commissioners turned down the settlement offer of $300,000.
Commissioners moved to issue a counter-offer of $700,000, with the county absorbing engineering costs of approximately $45,000.  The county’s original offer was $746,000 to settle the matter.
Meyer told commissioners they had three choices in response to the offer – accept it, make a counter-offer, or reject the offer altogether and proceed to trial.  Meyer says there is no guarantee that the county would win if the case goes to trial, as state law is a bit murky in this area.  (play audio  :36)
Huppert encouraged commissioners to not settle for less than the cost to replace the bridge.  (play audio  :26)
The bridge, over Long Branch Creek, collapsed in April when a tractor pulling an anhydrous applicator and two full anhydrous tanks attempted to cross the bridge.  The equipment, owned by Ag Partners of Hiawatha, weighed between 20 and 25 tons and the bridge was rated at three tons.
