(KAIR) -- Fire crews responded to two grass fires on the same property within a quarter mile of each other this weekend west of Atchison on U-S 73 highway.
According to Shannon Township Fire Chief Spider Shell, crews Saturday responded to a property just outside of Atchison city limits to a fire that destroyed 12 to 15 acres of a hayfield.
Shell says the cause of the fire was due to a bearing failure from a car on the highway, causing a spark and subsequent fire.
The other occurred on Sunday when an individual was mowing the land, hit a rock and caused a spark.
However, Shell says Shannon fire crews were able to contain that within 15 to 20 minutes with minimal damage.
