( KNZA )--Due to an increased kindergarten enrollment this school year, the Hiawatha school board has approved the hiring of an additional kindergarten teacher.
Following a closed-door session Monday evening, the board gave Superintendent Penny Hargrove approval to hire a fifth kindergarten teacher and also a full-time paraprofessional.
In other business, the board accepted the resignation of third grade teacher Danielle Reinecke, effective immediately. Reinecke, who had been with the district one year, has accepted a teaching position in Seneca.
Amber Boeckman of Seneca was hired to replace Reinecke as a third grade teacher.
Following a hearing drawing no public comment, the board adopted the 2012-2013 budget as published.
The nearly14.5 million dollar budget calls for a slight decrease in the property tax levy.
The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 52.67 mills, which is about a 4-tenths of a mill decrease over the 2011-2012 budget. The amount of taxes to be levied is nearly $4.3 million.
The mill levy decrease is attributed to a more than two million dollar increase in the district’s assessed valuation.
