(KLZA)- 35 year old Steve Darveau Jr. of Barada entered a plea of not guilty to a felony charge of manslaughter in Richardson County District Court Tuesday. A jury trial is scheduled to begin on December 12th.
Darveau is charged with the unintentional death of 64 year old Edward Packard of Cleves, Ohio on August 5th, 2011. Darveau was the driver of a southbound pickup on U-S Highway 73, approximately two miles south of Falls City when he started to make a left hand turn onto 703 Loop. A northbound motorcycle pulling a small trailer operated by Packard collided with the front passenger side of the Darveau pickup. Packard was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the accident.
Darveau was headed to the Falls City Jaycee’s annual tractor pull at Community Field at the time.
Packard's wife has filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging Darveau and the Jaycees are to blame for her husband’s death. Packard was traveling on Highway 73 at the time because flooding forced traffic to be diverted from Interstate 29.
