( KNZA )--Brown County’s two school districts are pursing a cooperative wrestling agreement.
The Hiawatha USD 415 and Horton USD 430 school board’s each approved Monday evening moving forward with a cooperative agreement.
Faced with a low number of participants in their wrestling programs, officials from the two school districts have been meeting to talk about combining the teams.
Under the proposal., Hiawatha High School Assistant Principal and Activities Director Andrew Gaddis said the high school teams would practice in Hiawatha and be coached by current Hiawatha High School head wrestling coach Chris Diller and assisted by the Horton head coach Doug Speer. He said the middle school teams would practice in Horton and would be coached by Speer and an assistant to be determined.
Hiawatha cut it’s middle school wrestling program two years ago due to funding and Gaddis says he feels a middle school program would greatly help the high school program.
He said it’s felt if they continue to pursue a cooperative agreement between the school districts, both programs would be able to survive and even gain a competitive edge against other schools.
Gaddis says the only real hurdle would be transportation to and from Horton. The board directed Gaddis to look further into possibilities.
He said paperwork needs to be submitted to the Kansas State High School Activities Association by September 1st in order to be approved for this school year.
