The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will hold a Local Work Group (LWG) meeting on Tuesday, 8/21/2012, 8:30 p.m., at the USDA Service Center at 1310 Oregon, Hiawatha, Kansas. “LWGs are important, because they provide recommendations on local and state natural resource priorities and criteria for USDA conservation activities and programs to the NRCS Kansas Technical Committee (KTC),” said Matt L. Sprick, Supervisory District Conservationist. The responsibilities of the LWGs are identified in USDA’s Conservation Program Delivery Manual. The LWGs recommendations will be reviewed by the KTC for submittal to USDA agencies. The purpose of the LWG is to ensure that a conservation needs assessment to identify priority resource concerns is developed using community stakeholder input, and to use the conservation needs assessment to help identify program funding needs and conservation practices. The LWG also recommends USDA conservation program application and funding criteria, eligible practices (including limits on practice payments or units), and payment rates, and assists the NRCS with public outreach and information efforts.
For more information about LWGs, or to become a member, contact your local NRCS staff at the USDA Service Center, 1310 Oregon, Hiawatha, Kansas (785-252-3161).
