The Nebraska Select 16-and-under and 17-and-under basketball teams competed in the Mr. Basketball Invitational in Kearney over the weekend.
The 16-and-under team finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. After finishing pool play with a 2-1 record, the Nebraska Select team defeated the Colorado Top Flight team from Ft. Collins, Colorado, 61-50. Chaz Dunn of Falls City Sacred Heart scored nine points in the game, and Matt Goltz of Sacred Heart had five points and a team high seven rebounds.
The Nebraska Select team then fell 58-54 to the Legends Titans of Parker, Colorado, in the second round. Dunn again scored nine points in the game and Goltz had three points.
The Nebraska Select 17-and-under team advanced to the championship game of the tournament, falling 60-55, in a close game to the Wisconsin Blizzard of Appleton, Wisconsin. Justin Damme of Johnson County Central scored two points in the championship game.
Before that, the Nebraska Select team defeated a team from Denver, 55-44, in the quarterfinals. Both Damme and Lane Barnhill of Falls City Sacred Heart scored two points in the game.
The Nebraska Select team then defeated the N-E-N Tropics team 60-49 in the semifinals, with Damme scoring six points and Barnhill two points in the win.
The Nebraska Select finished the tournament with a 7-1 record.
