Formal charges have been filed against a 44-year-old Effingham man accused of multiple sex crimes with a young girl.
James White made his first appearance Tuesday in Atchison County Court on two counts each of rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and aggravated criminal sodomy.
The crimes are alleged to have occurred between January 2010 and July of this year while the girl was 13 and 14 years old.
If convicted, White faces a mandatory life prison sentence under Jessica’s Law.
The case is being investigated by the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office as there is a conflict of interest with the alleged victim and a member of the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department.
White was arrested by Leavenworth County Deputies over the weekend.
Bond was set at 250 thousand dollars.
County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman says more charges against White are anticipated as the investigation continues.
He says 30 total counts are expected by the conclusion of the investigation.
