The Brown County Sheriff’s office is reporting a computer scam circulating in the county. Sheriff John Merchant says he has received several calls from concerned citizens reporting calls from people representing themselves as Microsoft and telling residents that their computer is sending "error reports" to their company. Merchant says the callers are offering to fix the problem at no charge and are asking residents to allow them to have remote access to their home computers. He said one resident said the person who called him had a very distinct accent and was hard to understand. Another resident said she had computer knowledge and checked her computer and there was no defect detected. So far, Merchant says no one has allowed these callers to have remote access to their computers. If access is given to these callers, he says all of your personal information on the computer can be compromised. Merchant is advising county residents not to give out any personal information or allow any unauthorized people to access your computers.
