Several hundred bicyclists will travel through the area next week.
They are participants in the annual Biking Across Kansas, which this year will make stops in Centralia, Troy and Elwood. The bicyclists will begin their 475-mile journey on Friday ( June 8th) at the Colorado border and end the trek next Friday, ( June 15th ) at the Missouri River bank in Elwood. The bicyclists will spend next Thursday night in Centralia. The following day they will travel from Centralia to Troy, where they will spend the night before concluding their journey at Elwood. The bicyclists will enter the south part of Brown County on Highway 159, travel through Horton, and go to U.S. 73 Highway where they will head east. The route will take them to Everest and they will take K-20 Highway to Purcell and through Doniphan County. Several Horton church youth groups are planning to set up food booths in the area regularly used as the site of the Horton Farmer’s Market. Brown County Sheriff John Merchant is asking motorists to stay alert to these bicyclists while driving. BAK labels the event as a recreational and social rally. The first Biking Across Kansas was launched in June of 1975. The route changes from year to year and nearly every corner of the state has been visited by Biking Across Kansas cyclists.
