There will be several activities around the region planned to commemorate the Memorial Day weekend.
The Atchison American legion will hold services on Monday in five locations around the county.
They will start at the Mount Calvary Cemetery at nine, then moving to Oak Hill Cemetery at 9:30, to Lancaster at 10, then Efffingham’s Evergreen Cemetery at 10:30, then to St. Ann’s Cemetery at 10:45.
The Atchison VFW will conduct services at Sunset Memory Gardens at 9:20, then on to Mount Vernon Cemetery at 9:45, followed by Sumner Cemetery at 10:15, then over to Rushville at the Sugar Creek Cemetery at 11.
Both organizations will meet for a joint service at Veterans Park at Noon.
In Leavenworth, the 126th Memorial Day Observance will take place at nine Monday morning at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
The Speaker for the observance will be Lieutenant General David Perkins, Commander for the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth.
Patriotic Music will be provided before and after the ceremony by Heartland of America Band Brass in Blue, based out of Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha.
The band will provide a free Memorial Day concert Friday evening at the Leavenworth High School Performing Arts Center.
Doors will open at 6:30 with the concert beginning at seven.
Scouts and volunteers will be decorating over 50 thousand graves on Saturday from both Leavenworth and Fort Leavenworth National Cemeteries.
Also Saturday in Winchester, there will be a breakfast put on by their American Legion from eight to noon at the Winchester Community Building.
On Monday morning in Valley Falls, services will be held by the VFW post 3084 at 10 in the Valley Falls cemetery.
At 11, there will be a dedication of a new flag, honoring area servicemen and women in the city park.
In Ozawkie, the American Legion will host a breakfast Monday morning beginning at seven.
At 11:40, there will be a Memorial service at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Also in Atchison, Monday regular trash will be picked up on Tuesday.
Tuesday regular trash will be picked up on Wednesday.
There will be no special pick-ups this week.
Both Jefferson and Atchison County Commissioners will not be meeting Monday.
