Falls City Main Street Construction Preparations Underway
04/04/2012

Construction on Falls City’s Main Street improvement project is set to start this spring – and that will mean traffic adjustments and some temporary accommodations for downtown merchants.
A tentative outline of the construction schedule for phase one and two was presented Monday evening to downtown business owners who will be affected by the first two phases of construction.
Prospective contractors have until April 10th to submit bids to the Main Street Committee, and the City Council will review the bids on April 16th.  A notice of receipt will be sent to the winning contractor on May 11th, which is the earliest date construction could begin.
Phase one includes the south side of 17th Street from Harlan to Stone, and the four corners at the intersection of 17th and Stone.  Phase two encompasses the west side of Stone from 17th to 18th and the four corners at 18th and Stone.  Construction on phase one is to be completed by August 15th, prior to the Cobblestone Festival, and phase two construction is to be finished by October 31st.
The work includes redoing the sidewalks, installing “bump-outs” at the corners of the intersections, and replacing the traffic lights with four-way stop signs.
During a meeting with Main Street Committee members Monday evening, business owners were informed of the tentative construction schedule and accommodations that will have to be made during construction.
Business owners and employees will be asked to use the city parking lots to free up the limited on-street parking spaces for customers.  Concern was expressed about maintaining access to storefronts during construction, and committee members said they would work with the contractor to minimize any inconvenience during the construction process.
The construction timeline is, as yet, tentative and much will be decided after a contractor is named for the project.
