Richardson County Assessor Regina Cummings submitted a letter to the Richardson County Commissioners Tuesday afternoon informing them of her decision to retire from her elected position as of April 1st, 2012.
Cummings was recently the target of a successful recall petition effort and a recall election had been scheduled by Commissioners for May 15th. With Cummings decision to retire, and the announcement prior to 16 days before the election, there will not be a recall election. Since the retirement was not part of the Commissioners agenda Tuesday, they could not take action to officially accept the retirement but are expected to do so during their meeting April 3rd.
In her letter to Commissioners Cummings noted it was with much regret and sadness she will retire after serving the taxpayers of Richardson County for approximately 30 years, the last 17 serving as County Assessor.
Cummings said she feels she has performed her job thoroughly, impartially and with the degree of professionalism the office deserves.
Cummings went on to say that in her opinion the “recall election” was because of valuation of property. She said the real question was not if I was doing my job properly, but was the result of anger of a certain minority of taxpayers for the valuations assigned to their respective property.
In closing Cummings thanked the taxpayers who supported her over the years and all state and county employees that she has worked with.
