Peru State College to Host Ralph Nader Monday
Peru State College’s Distinguished Speaker Series will continue Monday. Consumer advocate and former Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader will speak at the College Theatre, beginning at seven o’clock Monday evening.
Nader was recently recognized by The Atlantic magazine as one of the 100 most influential figures in American history. His first foray into public life came in 1965 when he took on the automobile industry with his book “Unsafe at Any Speed.” He has formed several citizen groups, including the Center for Auto Safety, Public Citizen, the Pension Rights Center, the National Coalition for Universities in the Public Interest, and the student Public Interest Research Groups.
He recently released his first novel, “Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us,” which presents a “practical utopia,” outlining the lasting improvements to society that America’s most powerful figures could achieve if they pooled their resources toward a singular goal.
Nader replaces Anthony Shadid, the former New York Times Beirut Bureau Chief and Pulitzer Prize winning author who passed away suddenly while on assignment in Syria. Nader is a close friend of the Shadid family and will share some stories about Anthony Shadid during his presentation titled. “Social Justice and World Affairs.”
Monday’s presentation is free and open to the public. A book signing in the Jindra Fine Arts building will follow Nader’s presentation.
