Nearly 11-thousand dollars is approved for allocation, following this week’s meeting of the Jackson County Commission, with various businesses and organizations to benefit.
The approval comes as the commission continues to receive requests for economic development funds.
The commission approved the allocation of $2,500 in economic development funds to Walter and Rosemary Junod for their new restaurant in Soldier, pending the start of construction. And also $2,500 to Bob Gay for his new restaurant in Mayetta.
Representatives of the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce appeared to request economic development funds to cover the monthly payment for the electronic sign at the intersection of U.S. 75 and K-16 in Holton. Chamber President Mike Tanking said the monthly payment has become a real burden because the income level from paid advertisements on the sign has declined over time. Chamber Director Jamie Claycamp said that a number of announcements are public service and generate no income.
The commission approved the allocation of nearly 59-hundred dollars in economic development funds to the chamber to cover the monthly payment for the sign for the next six months.
Also representatives of the Chamber discussed a request for economic development funds for the Tourism Council to provide promotional materials for Jackson County. Claycamp said they would like to have a handout that has a map, discusses the attractions and amenities available in the county and have a calendar of events for the year.
The commission agreed the Tourism Council should approach the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Tribal Council to see if they would be interested in cooperating with the county on handout that would promote both the county and the reservation, so the cost could be split between the two entities.
