Hilda Bergman

Hilda M. Wessel Bergman, 93, of St. Benedict, Kansas, died on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca, with her family by her side.

Hilda was the daughter of August and Elizabeth (Osterhaus) Wessel, and the tenth child of thirteen. Hilda was born on the farm north of Baileyville.

Hilda attended Lone Star Country School for one year, then she attended Sacred Heart School n Baileyville and graduated in 1947. After graduation she worked at Winterscheidt Café, Engelken Café, and in 1969 she started working at the St. Benedict school lunch program. She retired in 1993.

She married Emmett Bergman on January 14, 1950 at Baileyville Sacred Heart Church. They lived west of St. Benedict for two years then moved to St. Benedict in 1952. They built a home north of St. Benedict in 1981 and resided there. She was a passionate quilter, she quilted quilts for herself, her family and for the St. Mary- church. Emmett and Hilda celebrated their 25th, 40th and 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family. They were married for 56 years, before Emmett- death.

Hilda had eight children, Judy (Bruce) Larkin of Seneca, Jeanette (Gene) Holthaus of Centralia, Reg (Melanie) Bergman of St. Benedict, Connie (Nick) Huerter of Seneca, Marleen (Duane) Holthaus of Axtell, Lois (Doug) Enneking of Bern, Lyle (Deb) Bergman of Murray Kentucky, and Mark (Carol) Bergman of Seneca and a sister, Eileen Duryea of Seneca, 31 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren

Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett on August 23, 2006; her daughter, Jeanette on September 13, 2016; a grandson, Nathan Bergman on December 25, 1983; a granddaughter, Shelli Slater on August 13, 2018; sisters, Lucille Tanking, Helen Hermesch and Alma Dwerlkotte; and brothers, Ed, Henry, Albert, Vincent, Benedict, Lawrence, Clarence and Norbert.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 and 7 PM on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 7th at St. Mary- Catholic Church in St. Benedict.

Memorials can be given in Hilda- memory to St. Mary- Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
