Kenneth G. “Jerry” Idol, 76, of St. Joseph, MO, formerly of Highland, KS, completed his earthly journey October 12, 2022, at his home.
Jerry was born in St. Joseph, MO, on August 28, 1946, one of three children to Martin George Idol and Dorothy Laverne Robidoux (Sisk). He spent his younger years in Texas and then returned to Kansas where he graduated from Highland High School.
Jerry is a Vietnam veteran who proudly served his country with the Marine Corps from 1966-1970. He later joined the US Air Force and completed his military career when he retired in 1997 with over 23 years of total service. He was a welder by trader and help erect the iconic raised semi at the Faucett Truck Stop, was a foreman on the construction of the first Iatan power plant and helped with the building of the underground ball returns for Kool Crest Mini Golf. Jerry loved to play golf, do crossword puzzles and could almost always be found doing some sort of woodworking. He was also an avid Las Vegas Raiders fan, much to the chagrin of his family.
On June 18, 1966 he married Meredith (Jeanie) Waggoner at the Fanning Church. Due to his military career, they moved around a lot including several years spent at Bean Lake near Rushville, MO, prior to making St. Joseph their home 21 years ago.
Survivors include three daughters: Tammy (Gordon) Chapman of Erie, CO, Jeri Wilds of St. Joseph, MO, Kimberly (Pat) Urban of Denton; One brother: Martin (Jr) Idol of Highland, One sister: Pam McKnight of Levelland, TX; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and his “buddy” Smokey (cat).
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Olive Branch Cemetery, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, PO Box 33, Highland, KS 66035.
Services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland. Paul Buckles will officiate.Burial will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud, with military honors.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Saturday where the family will meet from 12:30-2 p.m. prior to services
