Vera Marie Irvin, 97, of Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 8, 2021, at the Atchison Senior Village.

Vera was born, June 16, 1923 in Highland, KS, the daughter of Charles T. and Mamie M. (Wilson) Butner. Vera attended Highland Schools and she and Clarence R. Irvin were united in marriage on April 4, 1940 in Hiawatha, KS. Clarence preceded Vera in death on July 2, 1954.

Vera and her children moved to Atchison in 1961 coming from Grandview, MO. Vera worked for JC Penney’s, and then Saunders Mop Factory, where she became a floor supervisor, until she retired. After retirement, Vera had worked in the deli at Dan & John’s Grocery Store; at the VFW hall, waiting tables in the evening; and then for a brief time doing office work at the SRS Office in the former TG&Y building. Vera was a devoted wife and mother and cared for the family home. Vera was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a former member of the Highland Methodist Church. Vera was a ‘Recipe Collector’ and thus was an excellent cook, who also made the best chocolate candy. Vera also enjoyed arranging flowers.

Vera is survived by a son, Charles (Renee) Irvin of Atchison; a daughter, Jeanie Winchester of Council Bluffs, IA; six grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Judy Eubanks; brothers, Lloyd, Melvin, Leonard, John Harmon, Lawrence Jeff and Gale Butner; sisters, Louise Beaman, Dorothy Winters, and Margaret Painter.

Memorial services will be at 11:45 AM, Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Highland (KS) Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 11:00 AM, Wednesday until of service. Memorial contributions in memory of Vera are suggested to the Atchison Senior Village and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
