Mary Sharon Horn, 66, passed away suddenly at her home in Madison, TN on May 12, 2020.  She was the born in Falls City, NE May 9, 1954 to Henry James and Maxine (Legg) Horn.

A 1972 graduate of Falls City High School, Sharon went on to get her nursing degree at Nebraska Methodist Hospital.  She started her nursing career in Falls City at Falls City Community Hospital she later moved to Casper working as a nurse at Wyoming Medical Center.  Sharon’s love of country music and a dream job guided her move to Gallatin, TN and later Madison, TN. Sharon was involved in many aspects of nursing but she found her true calling working at Vanderbilt University Hospital in the neonatal ICU unit.  Sharon was an extremely strong advocate and friend to all babies everywhere and the nurses who cared for them.  She dedicated her life to helping the small babies and their families, it became her passion.  During her career she was always learning and teaching about advances in the care of critically ill newborns.  She educated herself and the taught that knowledge to others mentoring many, many new nurses throughout her 30 plus years in the NICU.  The families of the babies she cared for trusted Sharon and stayed connected with her often for years.

Sharon’s highest triumph and pleasure was sending a baby home with his or her parents.  Upon her retirement her love of the babies in need led her to become a very active ambassador and advocate for the March of Dimes.  She spent many hours helping promote success for this organization.

She loved Precious Moments making several trips to the Chapel in Carthage, MO. She loved county music and attended many concerts becoming an avid photographer of the groups she loved.   Sharon had a gift for arts and crafts.  She created scrapbooks for the babies in her care to chronicle their hospital stay.  After retiring she turned her talents to creating unique and beautifully intricate greeting cards and door wreathes.  She was very talented.

She is survived by her sister and her husband, Karon and Jim DeRoin, White Cloud, KS and brother, Tom Horn, Casper, WY. A very loving  aunt she is also survived by nieces and nephews, Shawn and Pam Strecker, Falls City, NE,  Cortisa and Scott Handley, Barada, NE, Brandy Pipkin, Falls City, NE,  Kaitlin and Kenan Shafer, Morrill, KS and Tom Horn, Casper, WY and 2 great-nieces and 5 great-nephews and 1 great-great niece.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Mike Strecker and sister-in-law Vicky Horn.

Sharon was a very dedicated and caring nurse because of the current Covid-19 crisis she would not have wanted to endanger anyone. A private family burial will be held Tuesday, May 19, at the Steele Cemetery, Falls City, with Wayne Shafer officiating..

Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, from 10 a.m.until 5 p.m on Monday and until noon Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the March of Dimes to continue her desire to help the babies.
