Carl Ross Smith 85 of DuBois, Nebraska passed away at his home in DuBois on Tuesday March 24, 2020 with family at his side.  He was born September 14, 1934 at home in Strout, IL. to Thurman Ross Smith and Margaret Jane Taylor Smith.  At the age of 5 the family moved from Strout to rural Pearl, IL.  Carl graduated from Pearl High School in 1953.  Carl was inducted into the U.S. Army 21 May 1957.  He was a heavy equipment operator, was sent to Europe to rebuilt Europe after WW II.  He was discharged from the Army as an E5 on 30 April 1963.  Carl married Vera Louise Franklin in 1962.  To this union two children were born.  Kimberly Ann Gross and Michael Ross Smith.  Carl and Louise divorced in 1985.  Carl married Phyllis Elaine Andrews in October 1988.  Carl was preceded in death by his parents and a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Elizabeth Horton, Step-granddaughter Kaeliauna RaeAnn Young.  He is survived by his wife of the home, his children, Kimberly, husband Tony, Michael, stepson Corey Young, wife Virginia.  Grandchildren:  Kara Lynn Gross, Katherine Elizabeth Gross, Steven Michael Smith, Hillary Dawn, husband Howard Horton.  Great granddaughters Lyndsey Nichelle Smith and Abbygail Elizabeth Horton.  Step-grandchildren:  Ashlyn, Christina, Joshua, Carrie, Brianna, Jonathan, Aleciauna and Kaitlin. Brothers:  Donald Udell wife Maxine, Larry Gale wife Molly, Kevin Kent wife Lisa. And many nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. 

Private Grave-side services at a later date at the Omaha National Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska. Visitation on Friday, March 27, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee  City, Nebraska.
