August Olberding Jr., 91, Baileyville, KS, passed away Wednesday morning, May 8, 2019 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

He was born December 9, 1927 at the family home near Seneca, the son of August C. Olberding and Catherine Ronnebaum Olberding.  He attended Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School and graduated 8th grade at St. Benedict School in 1941.  He worked on the family farm until enlisting in the army in 1946, where he was stationed in Fairbanks, AK.

On May 6, 1950 he married Reva P. Kalin at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Steinauer, NE.  The couple made their home on a farm east of Baileyville, KS where they engaged in farming, dairying and raising livestock.  August retired from active farming in 1990, although he continued to manage his land throughout his life.

He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville.  He served on the parish council, was a lay communion distributor and taught CCD classes.  He was involved in the founding of Rural Water District #2 and was a member and donator to the Nemaha County Historical Society.

August was a devoted husband and father.  He became an avid fisherman in his retirement.  Other pastimes included playing cards, restoring player pianos, “engineering” farm equipment and enjoying coffee with friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reva, in 2008; sisters Laurine Olberding and Dorothy Lucille Allen; and seven brothers Raymond, Aloysius, George, Emmett, Victor, Orvin and Vincent.      

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Bill) Ronnebaum of Seneca, KS; a son, Glen (Rhonda) Olberding of Noblesville, IN; sister, Eileen Ricker, of Seneca, KS; and two grandsons, John and Nathan Olberding.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. on Friday, May 10th at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian burial will be 4 P.M. on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Sacred Heart Church, Baileyville.

Gus will be laid to rest next to his beloved Reva at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Seneca.
