Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca
Baileyville, KS

Evelyn C. Kramer, 91, of Baileyville died on Monday, April 15, 2019 at Life Care Center of Seneca.

Evelyn was born on June 7, 1927 in the family home in St. Benedict, the daughter of Frank and Mary Stegeman; when her parents died, she was only 2 ½ years old. She and her two sisters went to live with her Uncle and Aunt, John and Mary Blocker. She attended Saint Benedict School and graduated from the 8th Grade in 1942.

After she graduated, she worked in at the Blocker Hardware Store. In addition, she cooked for Father Egbert Hall and Father Cyril Boyer, rang the Parish bells and helped area families with domestic work. In 1944, Evelyn went to Kansas City and worked at Russell Stover’s Candy Company, returning home in 1945. She worked for Dr. Mollohan and his wife in Seneca, and again helped in the Hardware Store.

Evelyn married Leonard Kramer on June 10, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. The couple lived on a farm south of Baileyville. After raising her family Evelyn worked for several restaurants in Seneca, and the Gilford Hotel. In March of 1965, the couple purchased a farm east of Vermillion. After moving to the Vermillion community, Evelyn worked at the Centralia Café, the Marysville Infirmary, the Frankfort Care Home and the Nemaha-County Farm Care Home until they closed. In 1988, the couple retired from farming and moved to Baileyville. Evelyn was employed by Nemaha Valley Community Hospital for 18 years in Housekeeping & Laundry. She was named Employee of the month December 1993. She also kept house for Father George Klasinski and Father Sébastien Cleruvallath at the Baileyville Parish. Leonard and Evelyn celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary, prior to his death on January 9, 1998.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Society; the past several years she attended Mass every morning. She loved her flowers and gardening. She enjoyed attending the dances at Club 36 and the Eagles. The friendships she made playing cards in the Baileyville community brought her great joy.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan E. Kramer; and siblings, Mary Catherine Ornelas, Gilbert Stegeman and Amelia Stegeman.

She is survived by her four sons, Ron Kramer of Silver Lake, Gary (Helen) Kramer of Topeka, Duane (Susan) Kramer of Topeka and Dan (Gale) Kramer of Vermillion; sisters, Francis Kramer of Seneca and Juanita Koelzer of Othello, Washington; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
