Dishon- Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton

Leo J. Schaefer, 94, of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the Medicalodge in Holton, Kansas.

He was born on March 20, 1924 in Mercier, Kansas the son of John C. and Gertrude M. Schuetz Schaefer.

Leo worked for the City of Horton street department for over 20 years before retiring. He was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge and Horton Fish And Game Club. Leo enjoyed fishing, camping and going to the casino. On January 12, 1946 he married Martha Ellingson at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. She preceded him in death on July 26, 2003.

Survivors include a son, Mike (Karen) Schaefer of Silver Lake, Kansas; daughter, Connie (Alex) Szocs of Topeka, Kansas; sister, Rose Willis of Horton, Kansas; three grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Barbara and Cindy Schaefer, son, Daryl Schaefer, four brothers, Vernon, Lloyd, Howard and Kenneth Schaefer, four sisters, Thelma McGee, Wilma Peregrine, Mary Kaman and Teresa Richling.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. on Friday evening at the Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary where the family will greet friends following the rosary. Burial will be at the St. Leo's Catholic Cemetery.
