Dwane Ray Grimm, 80, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday evening, September 19, 2018, at Vintage Park Assisted Living in Hiawatha, where he had been a resident for several months.

Dwane was born in Sabetha, May 7, 1938, one of seven children born to Albert C. and Elma Strahm Grimm and had lived in the northeast Kansas area nearly all of his life. He grew up at Sabetha where he attended schools, later graduating from Sabetha High School with the class of 1956. Dwane worked for Mid Am Dairy in Sabetha prior to attending Barber College in Wichita. He moved his family to Lenexa where he operated a barber business for 7 years before moving to Fairview. He farmed in the Fairview area a short time before moving to Hiawatha where he worked for Flair Fold wood shutter plant in Hiawatha where he was the shipping foreman for a number of years. Dwane enjoyed carpentry and started his own carpentry business where he built and remodeled homes and businesses in the area until he retired. He and his wife Catherine traveled to state parks located in the Midwest where they served as park managers. In later years, Dwane assisted at the Hiawatha RV Park, and helped mow Hiawatha City properties until he had a stroke.

Survivors include a son David Grimm (Linda), a daughter Lora Baugher (Loren); step-son Clifton Barnhill (Linda); two brothers: Larry Grimm, Kenny Grimm; sister Laveta Bennett; grandchildren Josh Grimm (Julie), Michelle Boeckman (Jim), Tanner Barnhill (Kalie), Reed Barnhill (Maggie), Lane Barnhill, Brandt Barnhill; three great-grandchildren: Colin, Alexander, and Christian.

Dwane was preceded in death by his parents; step-grandson Matthew; sister Lenore Neff; and an infant brother and sister.

A Celebration of Duane’s life is planned for 11 a.m., Monday, September 24, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. Tim Champ, Freedom Hospice Chaplin will officiate. Cremation will follow services with private family inurnment at the Sabetha Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 12 noon until 6 Sunday evening. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services.
