Dorothy Marie Zabel, 94, of Westmoreland, formerly of Onaga, Kansas died Friday, June 16, 2018 at the Community Health Center in Onaga.

Dorothy was born February 19, 1924 in Onaga, Kansas, the daughter of Claude and Clara Schane Hayes. She attended White Pigeon Elementary school and graduated from Onaga High School in 1941.

After graduating from high school Dorothy worked for a Triple A office in Westmoreland until she and Wayne moved to Onaga. Dorothy was a homemaker and she then was a seamstress for a garment factory in Onaga and Holton.  She also worked at the Onaga Hospital as a nurse's aid and then over twenty years at the Onaga Drug Store.

Dorothy was a member of the Onaga Congregational Church.  She loved attending the different activities of her children and grandchildren.  She enjoyed doing needle point especially cross stitch, crocheting, doing word searches and jigsaw puzzles, and sitting in the porch swing with her dog.  Dorothy was a great cook and cooked lunch every day for the farm crew.   She was known for her fried chicken and cinnamon rolls. She and Wayne also enjoyed square dancing with many friends.

Dorothy married Wayne J. Zabel on September 30, 1944 in Manhattan, Kansas.  He preceded her in death on October 8, 1995.

She is survived by her children, Linda Sue Albert (Bruce), Silver Lake,  Stephen Wayne Zabel (Joy), Onaga; her grandchildren, Stacey Ewing (Tim Murray), Gainesville, Florida, Chad Abitz (Amy), Onaga, Jay Ewing (Lorraine), Cumming, Georgia, Jamie Mullin (Josh), Topeka, Becky Nelson (Mike), Leonardville, and Cody Zabel, Westmoreland; her great-grandchildren, Jason, Jaeden, Izabel, Teske, Koy, Rhett, Alexa, and Eldon. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Marsha Lynne Ewing, son-in-law, John Ewing; and her siblings, Annabelle Falkenstien, Schane Edwin Hayes, Walter Hayes, Merle Hayes and Galen Hayes.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego.  Reverend Keith Wiens will be officiating.  Burial will follow at Westmoreland City Cemetery.  Dorothy will lie-in-state, on Monday, at the funeral home beginning at 3:00 p.m. and the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  They suggest memorial contributions to the Onaga Congregational Church or the Ronald McDonald House, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.  Online condolences may be made at www.campanellafuneral.com.
