Johanna C. Hylton, 96, of Topeka, formerly of Seneca, died Wednesday evening, December 6, 2017, at Plaza West in Topeka.

Johanna was born to Albert and Elizabeth Waller Lierz on January 30, 1921, six miles east of Seneca in Adams township.  She grew up in this community and attended Ford Country School before attending Sts. Peter & Paul School.

As a young woman she was employed by the Dutch Mill; and later, for eighteen years she worked at the Starlite Motel and fifteen at the Nemaha Grade School.  

She married Warren Hylton on January 5, 1942 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.  The couple raised four children and were just shy of celebrating 52 years of marriage before Warren’s death on January 1, 1994.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society in Seneca; she enjoyed quilting with the church, embroidery and bingo. She had a wonderful sense of humor and always told her children they were what she cherished the most in her life.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her father Albert on September 29, 1942; her mother Elizabeth on April 2, 1972; thirteen siblings, Magdalene Hasenkamp on July 15, 1980, Lawrence Lierz on September 24, 1978, Stella Mergenmeier on February 5, 1996, Clarence Lierz on October 21, 1975, Albert Lierz, Jr. on June 6, 1942, Walter Lierz on November 13, 1985, Charles Lierz on December 16, 1995, Joseph Lierz on December 18, 1971, Eldora Knox on August 30, 1993, Rosanna Lierz on July 29, 1917, Laura Wietharn on November 29, 1998, Ralph Lierz on October 29, 1999 and  Elizabeth M. Larkin on August 21, 2011; and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Kathy) Hylton of Topeka; three daughters, Joan Hochard of Topeka, Bonnie (John) Irwin of Topeka, Kansas and Jeanne (Robert)Lucas of Peru, Illinois; former son-in-law, Maurice Hochard of Topeka; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, nine step-great grandchildren; 23 step-great-great grandchildren; and four step-great-great-great grandchildren.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Friday, December 8th at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given in Johanna’s memory to the Sts. Peter & Paul Stained Glass Window Fund, and sent in care of the family.
