Fredrick H. "Fred" Newell

Fredrick H. “Fred” Newell, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the F.W. Huston Senior Living Center in Winchester.  A lifelong resident of Oskaloosa, He was born December 17, 1931 on the family farm, Northwest of town, the son of Valentine Dixon and Grace Elva Hudson Newell. He attended the Fairview Grade School and was a 1950 graduate of Oskaloosa High School.. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, serving 1952-1956.  Fred  made farming and a livestock operation his career for 50 years, retiring and moving to town in 2008. He was a member of St. Mary’s-Immaculate Conception Church, Valley Falls, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #4015, Oskaloosa and later of Mount Oread Aerie #309 in Lawrence. He served in the Kansas Livestock Association Cow and Calf Stocker Council and the Jefferson County Co-Op Board of Directors. Fred was awarded the Jefferson County Soil Conservation Award in 1971. He also served as Sexton and Board Member of the Fairview Cemetery Association for many years.
 He was married to Mary Louise Wagner on May 28, 1960 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary L. Newell, of the home, two daughters, Carolyn (Terry) Robbins, Oskaloosa, Sharon (Claude) Powell, Shawnee, one brother, Frank Newell, Winchester, three grandsons, Mitchell Powell and Lucas Powell, both of Shawnee, and Gabriel Robbins, Oskaloosa.  He was preceded in death by one son, Phillip Newell, two sisters, Helen Mae Stevick and Velma McAferty, and two brothers, Arthur and Kenneth “Bud” Newell.
 Fred enjoyed his family, friends, livestock operation, hunting, country music and dancing.
 Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM, Monday at St. Mary’s - Immaculate Conception Church, Valley Falls.  Burial with U.S. Navy honors, at 2:00 PM, Monday at Fairview Cemetery, N.W. of  Oskaloosa.  Visitation 2:00 to 5:00 PM, Sundayat Barnett Family Funeral Home, Oskaloosa.
