Josephine "Evelyn" Ramirez, 93 of Lawrence, Kansas formerly of Horton, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Bridge Haven Village in Lawrence, Kansas.

She was born on January 7, 1923 in Bismarck, North Dakota the daughter of George and Leah Aiken Jeannotte.

She graduated from Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. She served as a Yeoman 2nd Class in the U.S. Navy during WW II. She separated from the Waves from Great Lakes, Illinois.

She married Greg Ramirez on September 6, 1947 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. She was employed at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Horton, Kansas where she started her employment as a secretary and retired as Chief Realty Officer.

Evelyn was a member of the St. Leo's Catholic Church & Altar Society, Horton Hospital Auxiliary, lifelong member of Horton American Legion # 415, VFW and Kickapoo American Legion # 415. She served on the U.S.D. #430 School Board and served as a board member of the Horton Housing Authority, volunteered as a SCHICK counselor and prepared taxes for seniors, and in distributing commodities. She also served as president and was member of the Horton Senior Citizens. Evelyn was a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.

She is survived by her husband, Greg of the home; five daughters, Patty (Mitch) Battese of Lawrence, Kansas, Gloria (Mike) Meerpohl of Holton, Kansas, Barbara (Jim) Tucker of Baldwin City, Kansas, Mona (Chris) Cortez of Horton, Kansas and Marlise (Kenny) Wilson of Horton, Kansas; three sons, Lawrence (Leigh) of Independence, Missouri, Steve (Carla) Ramirez of Lawrence, Kansas and Vincent (Stephanie) Ramirez of Casa Grande, Arizona; one brother, Elmer "Buzz" (Marlene) Jeannotte of Horton, Kansas; twenty grandchildren, thirty five great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

A rosary will be recited at 6:30 P.M. on Thursday evening at St. Leo's Catholic Church with visitation to follow. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 4, 2016 at the St. Leo's Catholic Church in Horton, Kansas. Burial will be at the St. Leo's Cemetery.
