Opal M. Bryant, 94, of Wetmore, passed away August 8, 2016 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton.
She was born December 16, 1921 at the home place north of Goff, the daughter of Edward and Ina (Hawley) Wittenbach. She graduated from Wetmore High School in 1940. She spent most of her life in the Wetmore Community.
Opal worked at the Wetmore School in the early years of her marriage until their daughters started arriving at which time she then became a full time housewife and mom. In 1957 they moved from Sabetha back to Wetmore and purchased the Hy-Klas Grocery Store, which they operated for 13 years. After that she and Boyd owned and operated a laundromat/carwash and later they worked together at the nursing home in Holton that is now Medicalodges.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wetmore.
She married Boyd Bryant February 14, 1942 in Sabetha. He preceded her in death in 1995. Also preceding her in death were her parents, a sister, Ione Fletcher and a brother Edwin Wittenbach.
Survivors are: three daughters, Bonnie (Norm) Wambeke of Topeka, KS, Karen (Bob) Dieckmann of Holton, KS and Brenda (Alan) Fund of Topeka, KS; two sisters, Dona McCulley of Holton, KS and Lola (Rich) Stattelman of Topeka, KS; one brother, Melvin Wittenbach of Hastings, NE; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2016 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow in Wetmore Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7-8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Wetmore United Methodist Church or Holton Community Hospital Hospice.
