Nadine “Dee” Messina, 90, longtime Atchison businesswoman died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Vintage Park Nursing Center in Atchison.

Visitation with the family will be Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.  Graveside services will be Monday, February 8, 2016 at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, Missouri. Nadine was born April 16, 1925 in Adrian, Missouri the daughter of William “Bill” and Elsie Smith Snow.  She attended elementary school in Adrian, graduating from Adrian High School.

She and Fred P. Messina were united in marriage on November 27, 1945 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kansas City, Missouri.  Mr. Messina preceded her in death on August 17, 1996.

Dee and Fred joined together in the operation of Skyway Supermarket and owned and operated Skyway Laundry from 1964—1984.  Together they formed the Three “M” Development Company which was an umbrella for the supermarket, cleaners, laundry and numerous farms.  They purchased a Wendy’s Franchise in 1984 and opened Atchison Wendy’s Restaurant.  They formed the Three “M” Investment Company in 1987 and built the Atchison Comfort Inn Hotel and in 1991 purchased the Atchison Motor Inn Hotel and operated these businesses for many years until they sold them.  Following the death of her husband, she and her son, Thomas built a Super 8 Hotel in Holton, Kansas and operated this business until they sold it.

She was a member of St. Benedict Parish, Atchison Soroptomist Club, Atchison Chamber of Commerce and the Junior Guild.

Survivors include her son Thomas (Virginia) Messina, Atchison, KS; three grandchildren, Nicola Messina Cohen, Fred P. Messina, II, Thomas “T.J.” Messina, Jr; five great grandchildren, Emily Messina, Sophia Messina, Piper Cohen, Hadley Cohen, Taylor Cohen, a grand nephew, Mark Harris and many great nieces and nephews.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Lois Drury Combs and Thelma Blevins.
