Olie Long

Olen Long (Olie), 87, formerly of Hiawatha, passed away peacefully at home with his family present early Saturday morning, April 18, 2015.

Olie spent most of his life in the Hiawatha area. He was born August 15, 1927, the son of Galen (Shorty) & Esther Long of Hiawatha. He had a younger sister Donna that he adored.

He joined the Navy, serving in World War ll. He worked various jobs. Brown County Undersheriff, and operated the Kansas City Star Route for 16 years, while farming. In 1968 he moved the family to Long Beach, California and worked for Standard Oil Company for 3 years. He hated big city life, so moved back to the Hiawatha area and worked at the Padonia Grain Elevator, for years, before deciding to operate a service station "Ole's Skelly" for the next 17 years. He then Retired, the first time, but went back to work at the White Cloud Grain Elevator in town for 10 years, finally retiring in 1989.

Olie loved life, he always had a huge smile and never knew a stranger. He loved his coffee buddies, and all his friends at Wal-mart. He loved to razz and tease, and he loved to DRIVE. He made numerous trips to Arizona and Oregon, and in record breaking time. He loved dogs, everyone’s…and secretly fed all his neighbors!  In his prime, he danced on roller skates, loved to water ski, camp, hunt coyotes, and fish.

He married Bonnie Strecker on December 23, 1971 at Reserve and made their home in Hiawatha.
In May 2013, he moved to Dallas Oregon to be closer to his daughters and their families.
He was preceded in death, by his sister Donna Weda in 1990, his father in 1991, his mother and wife in 2005, all of Hiawatha, two stepsons, Doug & Mike Strecker of Falls City, Nebr.
Survivors include his two Daughters, Connie (Steve) Marshall & Sherry (Kevin) Sailors both of Dallas, Oregon. 5 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

To honor Ole’s wishes, cremation is planned with services to be held at a later date.
