John Loyd Batchelder, 93, of Highland, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015.

Born south of Hiawatha, John was the youngest of eight children to Nelson and Annetta Hammond Batchelder, on July 27, 1921.  He grew up on a farm where he attended country school, later graduating from Hiawatha High School, prior to graduating from Highland Junior College.

He was a farmer all of his life and a veteran of post World War II, stationed in Japan.  He was a member of American Legion, Dillon-Bales Post #358.  John was a faithful member of the Highland United Methodist Presbyterian Church, also serving as lay leader.  His dry-wit humor was known well to his family and friends.

John married Dorothy Cole, on September 12, 1954.  She survives at home.  

They raised 3 children:  Mike of Highland, Beverly Montgomery (Terry) of Sabetha, and Patti Chauza (Bob) of Salt Lake City, UT.  His grandchildren are Christi Grant (Rob),  Daniel, Alex, Ryan Montgomery; great-grandchildren are Wesley and Keira Grant.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Bobbie Lyn Chauza; and all his siblings:  Ruth Jeffreys, Don, Edith Mann, Howard, Elsie Clements, David and Marjorie.

Cremation is planned with a Celebration of John’s life planned for 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, at Highland United Methodist Presbyterian Church with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Highland Cemetery with military honors.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland from noon until 6 Thursday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services at the Church.
