Alice Jenkins

Alice Loraine Jenkins, of Englewood, Colorado, formerly of Hiawatha, Kansas, died January 4, 2015, at the age of 101.

She was born November 22, 1913, in Hopeville, Iowa. Alice was one of ten children of William Warren and Mary Amanda Deets Beaman. She grew up and attended school in Iowa.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Paul of 72 years, daughter Peggy, her parents William and Mary; her four brothers: Boyd, Lloyd, Kenneth, and Jack Beaman; sisters: Elma McKay, Susie Backer, Louise Simms, and Betty McMurphy.

Survivors include a daughter Paula Bozarth and husband Ed of Englewood, CO; a grandson Kent and wife Tracy of Greenwood Village, Colorado; and a sister Lucille Franck of Story, Iowa.

Alice married Paul F. Jenkins, December 29, 1934, in St. Joseph, Missouri. They moved to Hiawatha in 1949 where Alice worked at the United Phone Company and later left the phone company to join her husband in the restaurant business. They operated the Topper restaurant from 1958-1960 and later owned and operated the Maple Leaf Restaurant for nine years. After a short retirement, Paul operated the Maple Grove Complex with Alice by his side they continued their work together for 23 years.

Mrs. Jenkins was a member of the First Christian Church for 80 years and a 50 year member of the order of the Eastern Star. She also was a Gray Lady Volunteer at the Hiawatha Community Hospital.

A celebration of Alice’s life is planned for 10:30 Saturday, January 10, at the First Christian Church in Hiawatha. Tony French will officiate. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery.
