Sabetha, KS

John H. Finney, son of John L. and Gertrude I. Ringer, was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, December 5, 1937.   He died in Topeka, Kansas, October 28, 2014.

John grew up in Lamar, Colorado, and graduated from high school there.  After attending Colorado State University, he served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1959.

John then attended Federal Communications School in California.  He was employed by Western Union Telegraph Company and moved to Tennessee where he received further training in telecommunications on the microwave system.

He worked at Western Union’s headquarters at the microwave control facility near Berwick, Kansas.  When Western Union sold their telecommunication business in 1991, John retired as an assistant vice-president in charge of network management of the 10,000 mile transcontinental microwave system.

After leaving Western Union, he farmed and raised cattle on his farm north of Sabetha, Kansas.

John was an avid golfer all his life until his failing health forced him to retire from that favorite pastime.  He also enjoyed water sports and fishing.

When John became a spirt-filled believer, he had a profound hunger for religious studies and spiritual growth.  His life was a testimony of his faith.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry and Anna Dove and Granville and Iva Howard; his father, Cecil G. Finney; his step-father, Raymond Jameson; two sisters, Della Lee Haver (Jasper), and Anna Mae Conrady;  two brothers-in-law, Robert Fulton (Betty) and Preston Grover; and one sister-in-law, Mary (Glen) Bridges.

John is survived by his wife, Jennie; his mother, Gertrude Jameson; two sons, Jay Finney and Hiram (Diana) Finney; one daughter, Mary Jane (Kevin) Dubberstein; two sisters, Sylvia (Don) DeVilbiss and Melinda Grover; four grandchildren, Corrie, Seamus, Aidan Finney and Avery Dubberstein; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
