Carol (James) Wells, 75, of Holton, formerly of Mayetta, KS passed away October 26, 2014 at her home.

Carol was born January 11, 1939 in Mayetta the daughter of George and Mildred (Burks) James.  She graduated from Mayetta High School in 1956, later graduated from Kansas University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and earned her Master’s Degree from Emporia State University.  She taught English in Fairview, Whiting and Mayetta.  She also taught English Comp at Washburn University for 14 years. She taught speed reading and tutoring at various educational centers.  Carol was the first Mayetta graduate to receive a full academic scholarship to Kansas University.  She was an accomplished pianist and played for several area churches and also served as EUM secretary for many years. She was a member of Bucks Grove United Methodist Church.

Carol married Robert Danks and they later divorced. In 1987 she married Melvin D. Wells in Mayetta, he survives of the home.  Other survivors include: her son, Roy Danks (Corrie) of Great Bend, KS; her daughter, Robin Danks of Phoenix, AZ; her step son, Dennis B. Wells (Linda) of Fremont, NE; her step daughters, Susan Wells of Tulsa, OK and Janetta Wells-Stucks of Independence, MO; her sisters, Georgine Ent (Wayne), of Radley, KS and Nell Ritchey (Bill) of Topeka, KS; her brother, Bill James of Lawrence, KS; and her 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Rosalie West and her brother Bob James.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 31, 2014 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.  Burial will follow in Mayetta Cemetery. The family will greet friends Thursday from 7-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
