Rita Alcott

Rita A. Alcott, 88, formerly of Circleville, died Sunday, October 26, 2014 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton.
 
She was born May 23, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Neil and Anna Meier Hughes.  She graduated from St. Dominic's Academy in Jersey City in 1943 and attended one year of college at the New Jersey College for Women.
 
In New Jersey Rita worked for Sheffield Farms as a switchboard operator and a bookkeeper, and later in the records room at Jersey City Medical Center.  In 1946 she moved to California where she worked at Security Pacific National Bank.  She started there as a bookkeeper and retired in 1978 as head of the note department.  After retiring, she and her husband Al moved to Circleville.
 
She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, the Altar Society at the church, and had served on the funeral dinner committee for many years.  She was a superintendent with the Jackson County 4-H Fair, was involved with Walk Across Kansas, helped with Vacation Bible School at Circleville, assisted with book sales at Beck-Bookman Libary, and was treasurer for a Home Demonstration Unit.  While in California she was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and helped with Girl Scouts.
 
She married Allan Alcott on August 15, 1948 at Santa Ana, CA.  He died January 2, 2009.
 
Rita was also preceded in death by a brother, James Hughes.
 
Survivors include two sons, Thomas Joseph Alcott, Huntington Beach, CA, and James Allan Alcott (Pamela), Madera, CA, two daughters, Patricia Marie Gould, Netawaka, and Virginia Ann Schirmer (Ed), Circleville, one sister, Winifred Schermerhorn (James), Maywood, NJ; seven grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Alcott, Brad, Jeff (Jessica) and Andrea Gould, Becky (Brandon) Shaw, and Sarah (Jeff) Palmer, and two great granddaughters, Eva Shaw and Nora Palmer.
 
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 1st at St. Dominic Catholic Church.  Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at Holton.  Rita will lie in state Thursday and Friday at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by visitation.  Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic Catholic Church, Jackson County Friends of Hospice, or Beck-Bookman Library, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
