 Edwin Joel Herman, 90, left us on a perfect day for golf to make his tee time at the course in the sky, Thursday, October 16th, 2014. 


Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, October 24, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Benedict Church with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as celebrant. The body will be cremated following services with private family burial of the cremated ashes to be held at a later date. A parish wake service will be Thursday, October 23rd, at 5:30 P.M. at Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation with the family to follow until 7:00 P.M. 

Edwin was born to Salome and Fidelis Herman in St. Peter, KS, Dec. 7th, 1923. He attended high school in Hill City, KS and college at Kansas State University 

He and the former Carolyn Ruth Chesney were united in marriage on Dec. 29, 1956 in Houston, TX. They moved to Hill City, KS where the operated the Western Hills Motel where their 7 children were born. In 1972 the family moved to Atchison, KS to operate Bellevue Country Club, where Ed was also the golf pro. In 1981, Ed and Carolyn purchased Coin Mart Laundry and Dry Cleaner, which he operated until he retired. 

Ed loved golf and played nearly every day. He was a Sand Greens State, won many other local tournaments, and had 14 hole-in-ones. He helped construct many small courses in western Kansas, including the Elks course in Hill City. He loved his local course Bellevue, working for a time as greens keeper, and even after retiring continued to help maintain the course when he was not playing. 

Ed was a proud grandfather and loved to spend time with his grandchildren, and hearing of their accomplishments. 

Ed was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic church and very supportive of ACES. 

Ed is survived by a brother Tony Herman and two sisters Anne Clark and Alfreda Myers. Three daughters Sondra (Steve) Channell, Prosper, TX. Susan (Tim) Turnbull, Atchison, Shelly (Bill) Heid, Cincinnati, OH. 2 Sons Doug (Alma) Herman, Draper UT. Greg (Amy) Herman, Olathe. 11 Grandchildren and 2 Great-Grandchildren. 

He was proceeded in death by his His wife Carloyn, daughter Sheryl and son Mark, father Fidelis, mother Salome, mother Ceclia, sisters Bernita and Tina. 

The family asks that in lieu of flowers please send donations in Ed’s name to St. Benedict’s School Endowment.
