Richard (Dick) Underwood, 59, Atchison, Kansas, passed away Monday, October 13, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, after a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be Friday, October 17, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with Pastor, Terry Wolfe officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, Kansas.  Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to Three Angels 7th Day Adventist Church and may be left in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home.  Online condolences may be left at www.arensbergpruett.com.

Richard was born November 9, 1954, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Clyde M. and Dorothy (Shell) Underwood.

He married Melinda (Bonnel) Underwood on June 21, 1980.

Richard graduated from Atchison High School in 1972, after graduating he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1972 serving until his honorable discharge in 1977.

Richard was employed at Midwest Grain in Atchison, Kansas, in the Maintenance Department for 35 years until his disability in 2012.

Richard was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church in St. Joseph, Missouri.

He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, camping, was an avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed all other sports as well, most of all, Dick loved spending time with his family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife Melinda of the home, two children, a son, Adam Underwood and fiancé Michelle Joy, Atchison, KS, and a daughter Lindsey Underwood, Atchison, KS, mother, Dorothy M. Underwood, Atchison, KS, three brothers, James (Mechelle) Underwood, Mike Underwood, John (Mario) Underwood, two sisters, Linda Underwood and Barbara (Rodney) Griffin, all of Atchison, father-in-law, Bob Bonnel, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde M. Underwood, paternal grandparents, Les and Jessie Underwood, maternal grandparents, Clyde and Daisy Shell and a nephew, Kurtis Griffin.
