Charles J. (Jim) Barrand, 72, of Hiawatha, died peacefully at his home Saturday, October 11, 2014, following a series of complications from heart and kidney failure.

Jim was born September 23, 1942, in Horton, Kansas, one of two children born to the late Lloyd and Jane (Hauber) Barrand.  He grew up in the Hiawatha area and attended school there until the age of 10 when the family moved north of Robinson to the Zion Community.  He attended Hilltop country school for a year.  His sixth grade year he began school in Robinson and graduated from there in 1960.  After graduation, he attended Highland Community College.

Jim managed a service station in Highland in his early adult life prior to owned and operated a custom combining business.  He farmed for a short time following his father’s death in 1975.  Jim was an excellent mechanic and owned and operated a mechanic shop on the west edge of Hiawatha for some time.  He worked for the Farm Bureau Insurance Office in Hiawatha for several years.  He became very active in insurance sales and for the last several decades, owned and managed Barrand Crop Insurance in Hiawatha.

He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, northeast of Robinson, nearly all of his life.  He was a member of Hiawatha Masonic bodies:  Masonic Lodge #35 AF&AM; Mt. Horeb Chapter #43, and Hiawatha Commandry #13.

Jim loved to watch sports, especially football, loved hunting, and was a licensed airplane pilot.  He built engines for and raced mud trucks and won numerous first place trophies at the events.  He dearly loved races of all kinds and buying old and classic cars.  Jim particularly enjoyed loaning one of his classic cars to a responsible teen to drive to prom.

Jim is survived by a son Charlie; a grandson Phoenix of the home, a granddaughter Aryian of Solomon, KS; a sister Judi Bruning of Robinson; two nephews:  Mitch (Candice) Bruning, their daughters Serenity and Samantha, Bret (Jennifer) Bruning and their daughter Quill; and a niece Elizabeth Bruning.

A Celebration of Jim’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, at Zion United Methodist Church, with Pastor Paul Waters officiating.  Cremation will follow service with family inurnment at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 12 noon Tuesday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.
