Virginia Meyer

Virginia Margaret Meyer, 84, of rural Powhattan, died Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha where she resided a month.  She previously had been a resident of Vintage Park Assisted Living Community in Hiawatha.
Virginia was born the fourth of four children, April 4, 1930, to Grover and Virginia (Ernst) Smith, at Shawnee, KS.  Virginia graduated from Shawnee High School in 1948; and Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in 1952.  She worked as Home Demonstration Agent in Anderson and Brown Counties in Kansas prior to obtaining her master’s degree from University of Wisconsin in 1957.
Virginia married George Meyer, October 30, 1960.  She lived her entire married life in the Powhattan community, assisting George in their farming and livestock operation.  George passed away January 3, 2007.
Survivors include a daughter Joyce Rush (Roger) of Highland; a son Mark Meyer (Becky) of Powhattan.  Also surviving are five grandchildren:  Katherine & Laura Rush, Emily, Sadie, and Joey Meyer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers:  Floyd, Walter and George.
Virginia was involved in many community organizations.  She served as community leader for Modern Sunflower 4-H Club and a county fair judge for over 40 years.  She also served on the Brown County Extension Council, Brown County Services for the Elderly Advisory Board, and Area Agency on Aging.  She was voted Women of the Year by Business and Professional Women in 2002..
Virginia was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairview where she was also a member and held various offices in St. Paul Dorcas Society.  She had been very active as Sunday School Teacher and Vacation Bible School program.  Organizations also important to Virginia were the Grand Prairie Homemakers Extension Unit; Powhattan Neo-Century Club; and the auxiliary to Wenger Post #373, Powhattan American Legion.
A Celebration of Virginia’s life is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, October 13, at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Fairview, with Reverend Michael Dunaway officiating.  Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 10 a.m. Sunday, where the family will meet friends from 4 until 6 that afternoon.
