 Lucille Marie Scheve Slattery, 98, Mayetta, Kansas, died Wednesday, August 6, 2014, while returning to Kansas from visiting her daughter in Missouri.

Lucille was born February 13, 1916, at the home farm of her parents, Bernard (Barney) J. Scheve and Mary Margaret (Dohm) Scheve, near Maydale, Kansas. On April 26, 1922, at the age of six, Lucille lost her mother. Lucille attended elementary school at Saint Mary’s Church in Maydale, Kansas, graduating from the eighth grade. Although family circumstances prevented Lucille from obtaining any further formal education, she had a lifelong love of reading and learning.

She and Francis Michael Slattery were united in marriage on June 14, 1947, at Assumption Catholic Church in Topeka, Kansas. Before her marriage, Lucille was employed in Topeka, Kansas, first in private homes and later in retail businesses. During WWII, she served as an U.S. government civilian employee at Forbes Supply Depot, responsible for documentation of military freight train shipments. After her marriage, Lucille worked with her husband on the family farm in Mayetta. She continued to operate the farm after Francis’ death on September 16, 1970.

Lucille was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta, Kansas. For many years, she was an active member of the Altar Society. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her daughter and son-in-law throughout the United States, especially two trips to Hawaii. In 1999, she traveled to the Holy Land and to Rome, Italy, with members of her church.

 Survivors include three daughters, Mary Frances Slattery (Howard S. Bishop), Fenton, Missouri; Martha Lou Slattery (Morton Pellatt), Salt Lake City, Utah; and Connie Sue Slattery, Topeka, Kansas; one sister-in-law, Rose Mary (Hohne) Scheve Senn, Emporia, Kansas; two grandsons, Daniel Francis and Andrew Jared Pellatt; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three older brothers, John M. Scheve, Peter B. Scheve, and Frederick J. Scheve; and three younger sisters, Marcella E. Kern, Emma M. Senn, and Marie J. Nagel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mayetta, Kansas. The rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2014 with visitation to follow at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
