Delwin Scarbrough,
Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha
Hiawatha, KS

Delwin Scarbrough, 87, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday morning, August 06, 2014, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.

Delwin was born in Hiawatha, Kansas, January 17, 1927, to Mark and Florence Kuebler Scarbrough. He was preceded in death by his parents and his 4 brothers, Otho, Mark Eldo, Loris, and Delwin’s twin brother, Delbert.

He graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1945 and immediately joined the Army, serving 18 months, mostly in Italy. After his military service, he attended Kansas State University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education. Later, he earned a masters degree in mathematics from Fort Hays State University. In his early years, Delwin taught in Winona, Corning, Reserve, Effingham, and then for 32 years, at Hiawatha junior high and high school.

Delwin and Darlene (Maguire) Scarbrough were married on December 26, 1950. Delwin is survived by Darlene and their 4 children, Randel, Kathlene, Rick, and Cynthia; 2 sisters-in-law, Pat Lancaster and Sue Scarbrough; 6 nieces and nephews; 6 great nieces and nephews; and 2 great- great nieces.

During his career, Delwin was a member of the Kansas National Education Association and the National Education Association. He was also a member of the Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics, and he served 3 terms on the Kansas Professional Teaching Practices Commission, serving as chair for one year. Delwin was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, where, for a time, he served on numerous committees and taught Sunday School. Delwin was especially proud of his military service, his terms on the Professional Teaching Practices Commission, and his life-long service to public education. Outside of his career, he enjoyed playing bridge, watching football and basketball, and, most especially, fishing. In his final years, Delwin was a man with an easy smile and a chuckle, and he was grateful for the care he received at Maple Heights Nursing Home. He enjoyed the men’s coffee time where old friends came to visit, and he was proud to represent residents on an advocates’ council there.

The family suggests contributions to Maple Heights or to the First United Methodist Church, which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., Hiawatha 66434.

A visitation will be held at Chapel Oaks from 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 8,  and a celebration of Delwin’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday August 9, at the First United Methodist Church in Hiawatha, with Reverend Kay Scarbrough and Reverend Randy Quinn officiating.  Private inurnment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.

In Delwin’s honor, casual dress is welcome.
