Jim was born at Highland, March 13, 1931, one of six children born to Robert Rice and Minnie Belle McQueen and had lived nearly all of his life in Hiawatha. At a young age, his family moved from Highland to Hiawatha after the Depression.

Betty was born on July 8, 1935 in Troy, Kansas to Kemper and Violet (Edison) Sharp. She lived in Wathena and was a seamstress at Big Smith in St. Joseph before retiring and moving to Leavenworth in 1993.
